One of the best ways to usher in a new year is to witness a dazzling fireworks display. Cities around the world compete to create the most impressive show.

Sadly, for the past five years, Hong Kong’s traditional display in the harbour has been missing. It was cancelled in 2019 because of civil unrest and in the following years due to the pandemic.

The return of the show is, therefore, welcome. The Tourism Board says it will be bigger and longer than before.

There will be a 12-minute display beginning at midnight on New Year’s Eve, stretching along 1.3km of the harbour from Central to Causeway Bay. Fireworks will be launched from five vessels accompanied by an eclectic musical playlist.

There are hopes the fireworks, along with other Christmas and New Year festivities, will give the economy a boost as the city strives to recover from the pandemic. They will, no doubt, draw a large crowd.
