With stronger demand prospects for acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) in Asia and the world over, leading ABS resin manufacturer Nippon A&L seeks to expand its overseas manufacturing presence and market reach. In operation for almost half a century, the Osaka-based company has established itself as a trusted total solution provider of standard and special grades of ABS polymers to first-tier suppliers of major global Japanese car manufacturers.

We do not compete with major resin manufacturers volume-wise. Our commitment is to deliver highly value-added products that enable our customers to produce superior solutions

Jointly owned by renowned chemical manufacturers Sumitomo Chemical and Mitsui Chemicals, Nippon A&L is strengthening its supply chain network that spans Asia and North America. It has factories in Japan and a joint venture for plastic compounding and sales offices in mainland China and Hong Kong. Nippon A&L operates in Thailand and other Asean markets through a joint venture with IRPC, and has built a solid client base in India via a joint venture with Bhansali Engineering Polymers.

In line with its global strategy, Nippon A&L opened a representative office in Detroit in January last year, targeting to serve Japanese automakers in North America. It now aims to carve a presence in Mexico.

“We’re open to working with local players, whether through joint venture or technology licensing, to fortify our global foothold and boost capacity, and create win-win solutions with them via technology transfer,” says Toshiro Kojima, representative director and president.

Nippon A&L focuses on the automotive sector, foreseeing huge opportunities in the segment with automakers using more of speciality polymers and expanding their domestic capacities. It also caters to leading companies in the home appliance and electronics industries. Apart from ABS resins, Nippon A&L produces specially designed styrene-butadiene rubber latexes to meet paper coating, lithium-ion batteries and tyre applications. “We do not compete with major resin manufacturers volume-wise,” Kojima says. “Our commitment is to deliver highly value-added products that enable our customers to produce superior solutions. We also provide technical assistance, sales support and application development.”
