Ocean Plastics (OPC) is giving plastic a good name. A specialist in polyvinyl-chloride (PVC) compounds, resins, pipes and sheets for the construction, hi-tech, medical and advertising industries, the company has a passion for innovation that is changing the way people feel about plastic products.

OPC’s latest inventions include the world’s first water-based, dimethylformamide (DMF)-free polyurethane (PU) leather and cell wood, an excellent substitute that performs better than real wood.

“We want to grow our eco-friendly business by shifting our efforts into inventing more green technologies,” says chairman William Tan.

Drawing on a superior research and development team with more than 50 years of experience, OPC has developed the water-based PU leather without incorporating the toxic substance DMF used by most manufacturers.

The PU leather can be found in various applications such as upholstery, apparel and sports accessories. The company foresees demand for its invention to multiply when the EU starts requiring brands to join the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals Programme by the year 2020.

Cell wood is a wood-like product made of 100 per cent thermoplastic material. It is another non-toxic OPC green product, which is completely recyclable and reusable, and is already being used as flooring in Singapore’s Changi Airport.

Resistant to decay, pest infestation, discolouration and thermal expansion, the product is waterproof, fireproof and slip-resistant and does not require finishing.

The company is eager to meet potential clients and users for its PU leather and cell wood products. In addition to this, OPC is open to collaborations with companies in Vietnam and other Southeast Asian countries to which it can transfer its advanced plastic technologies.

“We truly value honest partners who will help us achieve excellent customer service and maintain our market share,” Tan says. “Together, we will promote global awareness for Mother Earth.”
