Considering the many signs and measures within today’s business and social spheres, the number of connected devices is forecast to reach 31 billion by 2020. The upsurge is welcome news to Taiwan-based controller technologies and solutions producer Silicon Motion.
The global leader in developing NAND flash controller integrated circuits (IC) for solid-state storage devices (SSD) and speciality radio frequency ICs for mobile devices has already supplied the world with more than five billion NAND controllers in the last decade, 2.2 billion of which were delivered in the past three years. Aiming to become a US$1 billion company in the midterm, Silicon Motion continues to ride the growth train by bolstering its research and development (R&D) activities, and advancing its technologies while further penetrating markets in China and Asia.
An enabler of groundbreaking controllers, Silicon Motion links Chinese SSD brands with global NAND flash developers to help local makers penetrate markets quickly.
Through its China platform, the company supports Chinese start-ups, giving it the opportunity to see the industry’s present and future requirements.
“We saw that storage will have a big market in the future, so we helped small companies in China respond to this demand,” says Wallace Kou, president and CEO of Silicon Motion. “We have been supporting them since they started making MP3s, DVDs, SD cards and USB flash drives, and now as they develop SSDs.”
“We help them craft the product vision, test, manufacture and engage with global makers such as Samsung and Toshiba, and other major original equipment manufacturers,” Kou says.
Silicon Motion sells complete standard and customised solutions to large and small companies. Its extensive market knowledge cuts across businesses in the mobile phone, electronics, industrial, personal computers and cloud computing fields.
Keen on serving the automotive sector, and other areas where artificial intelligence, internet of things and cloud applications are gaining prominence, Silicon Motion welcomes R&D collaborations within the region.
“We continue to learn about new technologies to serve a wide range of customers,” Kou says. “We constantly adjust the features of our storage and controllers to offer better products and solutions, and to lead the market particularly in China.”
Adopting the global service mindset of merging Western management styles with the advanced R&D and technology of the East, Silicon Motion powers the world’s top SSD brands.
“We are a home-grown company, so we remain focused on letting our clients’ brand shine,” Kou says. “As our customers grow, we also grow and succeed.”
