Zombies, pirates and snipers – five outstanding games headed our way next year

A new instalment in the reborn Resident Evil franchise, a first-person shooter that lets you control elite commandos, and a modern Super Mario are among a selection of new offerings for gamers to look forward to in 2017

Gamers have plenty to rejoice about. At the recently concluded PlayStation Experience event in San Francisco, Sony unveiled some 40 new games it is working on. Some of the popular game titles showcased at the E3 event in June and at other events afterwards are likely to hit the stands in the next couple of months.

Here are some of the popular titles or new games for Windows, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Apple’s iOS that you should keep an eye on.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC

Japanese game house Capcom has revived the Resident Evil series. Coming out on January 24, Resident Evil 7 is an action adventure game but is not going to be an outright shooting game, and will involve plenty of puzzle-solving missions, too.

The game’s storyline revolves around a civilian looking for his wife. His search ends up at a derelict plantation mansion plagued by humans turned into zombies. The game is built on the new RE engine which makes it playable on VR-based platforms as well.

Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3

Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC

The third edition in the Sniper: Ghost Warrior series, the new game is more of an open-world title where the player enjoys greater flexibility of movement. Expected to show up in January, the game’s release date has been pushed to April 4 to optimise it better to run on all platforms smoothly. The game is developed by CI games, a Polish company that shot to fame with the Sniper series.

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands

Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands is a first-person shooter/action game that allows control over a bunch of elite commandos sent to dismantle the Santa Blanca cartel by taking down its key members one by one. Developed by French company Ubisoft, the game is likely to release on March 7.

Sea of Thieves

PC, Xbox One

Microsoft’s Sea of Thieves is an online multiplayer game with an open-world setting. The game revolves around the life of sea pirates fighting with each other in a first-person action adventure game. The game was first showcased at E3 and is likely to be released only on Windows 10 and Xbox One in February. The game is developed by UK-based video game company Rare, a subsidiary of Microsoft.

Super Mario Run

Super Mario Run is a modern-day adaptation of popular side-scrolling, endless running game Mario. Developed by Nintendo, the game was unveiled at the Apple iPhone 7 and 7 Plus launch event in September and will be released only on iOS on December 15. The game can be played in portrait mode allowing users to play it without using both hands. The game can be downloaded for free but to unlock all its features, it charges a one-time fee of US$9.99.
