I Am a Hero
A quality addition to the zombie horror comedy lore, and one of the best zombie movies that Japanese cinema has ever produced, this adaptation of Kengo Hanazawa’s hit manga provides an engrossingly realistic view of a zombie holocaust. (Now showing)
In his first English-language feature, Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos (Dogtooth, Alps) expands his utterly bizarre vision to reflect on modern relationships. Even a synopsis would fail to convey the disturbingly dark humour he has in store. (Opens today)
The J-horror genre may seem stagnant, but this film by Yoshihiro Nakamura manages to find a new skin-crawling set-up in today’s modern apartment buildings. Its metafictional commentary on horror conventions is another plus. (Opens today)
Tale of Tales
After his mafia epic Gomorrah and celebrity fable Reality, Italian director Matteo Garrone turns to adapt a 17th-century fairy tale anthology for this English-language triptych. The result is gory, funny, and strangely hypnotic. (May 14, 15 & 17, part of Le French May)
Margherita Buy plays a jaded filmmaker counting the cost of artistic integrity in Nanni Moretti’s humane drama, which finds comedy in John Turturro’s conceited actor and pathos in the protagonist’s relationship with her dying mother. (Now showing)
