1 Hacksaw Ridge

Mel Gibson puts his years of scandals behind with this intense war drama, which examines his pet themes of faith and courage through the true-life tale of conscientious objector Desmond Doss, who served as a medic in the second world war without carrying weapons. (Opens on December 1)

2 I Am Not Madame Bovary

Feng Xiaogang deservedly won the best director prize at the Golden Horse Awards for his biting social satire, featuring a de-glamorised Fan Bingbing as a village woman seeking justice in China’s labyrinthine legal system. However, Feng may be courting future troubles with government censors. (Now showing)

3 The Road to Mandalay

The bleak working life of undocumented immigrants in Thailand is observed with unflinching poise by the Chinese-Burmese director Midi Z in this tragic drama. Both Kai Ko and Wu Ke-xi give career-best performances as would-be lovers who meet at the wrong time. (Opens on December 1)

4 Sword Master

Forty years after he starred as the lead hero in Shaw Brothers hit Death Duel , actor-turned-director Derek Yee reimagines the Gu Long wuxia novel adaptation as a visually entrancing and surprisingly poignant tale of power tussle and unrequited love in the martial world. (Opens on December 1)

5 Midnight Diner 2

The second film based on Yaro Abe’s popular manga offers more of the same delightful touches of humanity. Set around a late-night eatery in downtown Tokyo, its three stories will warm the hearts of hectic urban dwellers – even if they fail to leave a lasting impression. (Opens on December 1)
