Ken Loach’s rage against social injustice has barely dampened in the 50 years since he took on the subject of homelessness in his television play Cathy Come Home, and the British director has once again sounded an angry call to arms with this 2016 Palme d’Or winner at Cannes. (Opens on February 9)
A vast improvement over the Dark Knight’s joyless outing in last year’s live-action Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice , this hilarious spin-off from the 2014 hit The Lego Movie puts the fun back into superhero crime-fighting with its satirical genius and cheeky meta-references. Revolving around the largely untold stories of how racial segregation formed part of the history of the US-Soviet space race, this feel-good drama by director Theodore Melfi is the perfect antidote to the #OscarsSoWhite controversy – and a wonderfully crafted crowd-pleaser in its own right. Chilean director Pablo Larrain has made a range of extraordinary films since the late 2000s, although it’s this English-language debut – a sublime portrait of the newly widowed Jacqueline Kennedy (played by the Oscar-nominated Natalie Portman) – that makes him a household name. For those missing the gun-fu mayhem previously considered the bread and butter of Hong Kong action cinema, go and see this delirious bullet ballet now. In his best role in a long time, Keanu Reeves stars as the titular retired hitman back on a perpetual, thunderous killing spree. (Opens on February 9)
