For large swathes of the internet, the only important development about any new Jurassic Park movie was whether Jeff Goldblum would be in it.
Well, rejoice Goldblumites: The actor will reprise his role of mathematician Dr Ian Malcolm in the 2018 sequel to Jurassic World, after his absence in the 2015 reboot of the franchise, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
You know what that means? More meme-making material!
Well after he first starred in the original set of dinosaur movies – 1993’s Jurassic Park and 1997’s The Lost World – Goldblum became one of the internet’s favourite characters.
In fact, he became a meme even before memes were considered stuff that only exists online.
The “Jeff Goldblum is watching you poop” image popped up around 2002 on a Geocities site (old-school!), with a call to actually print these bad boys out and plaster them on bathroom stalls. In real life.
Since then, memes have come to live primarily on the internet. And the Goldblum-inspired imagery abounds.
“You are one of those strange stars who people get obsessed by,” Graham Norton told the actor last year. “The Internet looooves Jeff Goldlblum.”
There are YouTube re-enactments and subreddits dedicated to his now-famous Jurassic Park line: “Life, uh, finds a way.”
Such public fascination has become such a part of Goldblum’s public persona that the marketing for his 2016 action film Independence Day: Resurgence included a site that allowed users to make their own Goldblum memes, called “Meme Resurgence.”
When the actor publicly rated the quality of these memes as part of the promotion for that film, Geek.com wrote, “Jeff Goldblum on Jeff Goldblum memes is Jeff Goldblum inception.”
And even though he was absent from the 2015 Jurassic World movie, he’s had plenty of movie and commercial work to appease his internet fandom. Even Goldblum-in-the-wild is internet gold.
The news he’s joining the Jurassic World sequel – which will also star Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard – came as a bit of a surprise. The actor said last year he hadn’t heard of any plans to have him back.
“I did those couple and I’m entirely satisfied,” Goldblum said at a screening in 2016. “If I never did any more, I’d be entirely nourished and happy and fulfilled from having done these. They’re doing spectacularly well without me.”
