Classic American films: Rocky – John G Avildsen’s boxing drama is not the film people remember

  • The original Rocky is unrelentingly downbeat for most of its runtime, with very little air-punching triumph – and not much boxing either
  • A seduction scene that looks more like coercion, and an undercurrent of racial anxiety that today feels a bit like racism, don’t help
