Children of Clockenflap: the kids who’ve grown up with Hong Kong’s biggest music festival

As the music and arts festival turns 10 this year, we meet a group of young Clockenflappers to find out what they love most about the annual event

Clockenflap, Hong Kong’s biggest annual music festival, is marking its 10th anniversary in November. While it’s a hugely popular event for adults, many children in Hong Kong have grown up with the festival and don’t remember life in the city before it first took place in 2008.

Organisers have always emphasised the family-friendly nature of the festival and every year throngs of kids turn up with their parents to enjoy the children’s entertainment as well as the music and art – and, of course, the food.

Ahead of this year’s 10th-anniversary edition, we sat down with Hong Kong children who have been to every Clockenflap, to find out what they most enjoy about the weekend.

Most said the best thing about Clockenflap was the chance to hang out with friends and eat whatever they wanted. Some had met a few famous faces, but they weren’t as impressed as their parents were, while almost all were stumped when asked what on earth a Clockenflap could be.

The most popular activity by far was the bouncy castle – even though it knocked one of the kids’ teeth out. Don’t worry: apparently the tooth fairy still found it.
