North Korean leader saw the girl group perform last month in a rare concert in Pyongyang, and now they are bringing the same set to Hong Kong. Ahead of this weekend’s show, here are some of their best hits to get you ready to dance
Not many K-pop stars can say they have performed for – and taken photos with – North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. But popular South Korean girl band Red Velvet were one of a few K-pop groups chosen to perform for the supreme leader at a special concert in Pyongyang last month.
“There had been interest in whether I would come and see Red Velvet. I had initially planned to attend a performance the day after tomorrow, but I came here today after adjusting my schedule,” Kim – who is reportedly a big fan of the group – was quoted saying. “I thank you for this kind of gift to Pyongyang citizens.”
And now Hongkongers have a chance to watch Red Velvet perform the same set list from Pyongyang, which includes songs like Bad Boy and Red Flavour. The five-member girl group will be performing on the same bill as fellow SM Entertainment artist Taeyeon, of Girls Generation, as part of the Wonder K Concert event at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on May 20.

Be Natural
The 2014 music video features the group dressed in slim-fitting suits as they strike a series of femme-fatale poses and sing about how love feels like being in “heaven’s eye”. Fun fact: the track is a cover of fellow girl group S.E.S.’ popular hip-hop single released in 2000.
Red Flavour
This is Red Velvet’s signature track, released in 2017 on “The Red Summer” EP. The music video for the track sticks to the EP’s summery theme, showing the quintet dancing alongside summer fruits such as watermelons and lemons.

Bad Boy
The music video for this 2018 track is a fan favourite, showing the Red Velvet girls dancing at a club and then holding a girls-only sleepover, complete with fluffy bunny eye covers and fuzzy pyjamas. A perfect combination of sultry and innocence.
Dumb Dumb
From their 2015 debut album, “The Red”, this single is full of references to Michael Jackson hits such as Beat It, Billie Jean, Thriller and more. In the music video, the group draw on visual influences such as Alice in Wonderland and Red Riding Hood.

In the sports-themed music video for this synth-pop single, the members attempt to sabotage each other in a variety of colourfully choreographed ways to be crowned the final “winner” in the game of love. Maybe it’s not hard to see why Kim Jong-un might like this group so much.
