K-pop bands BTS, Wanna One to play at Mama Hong Kong awards ceremony

South Korean boy band phenomenon BTS will perform at the Hong Kong edition of the Mama K-pop awards ceremony in December.

Mama – the Mnet Asian Music Awards – is one of the most important annual awards events for the K-pop industry, and has been staged by South Korean entertainment company CJ E&M since 1999.

Joining BTS at the Hong Kong event will be K-pop boy band Wanna One.

Mama is being staged in three cities this year. The Mama Premiere is iin Seoul on December 10, the Mama Fans’ Choice event in Saitama, Japan, on December 12 and the main Mama awards ceremony at Hong Kong’s AsiaWorld-Arena on December 14.

K-pop band Wanna One will also play at the Hong Kong Mama awards ceremony.

BTS will also be appearing at the Japanese Mama event, alongside the hugely popular girl group Twice.

At the Hong Kong event, awards will be handed out for album of the year, song of the year, artist of the year, best music video, best male and female artist, best male and female group, and best new artist.

BTS have become arguably the biggest band in the world this year. The seven-member outfit made history in May when their album Love Yourself: Tear hit No 1 in the United States, making them the first K-pop group to top the Billboard 200 music charts. They again hit No 1 on the US album charts in September with the release of the follow-up album Love Yourself: Answer

The band are also on the road for their Love Yourself world tour, which calls past Hong Kong’s AsiaWorld-Arena for four shows on March 20, 21, 23 and 24.

The tour began on August 25 in Seoul and is scheduled to end after the Hong Kong shows, with the finale in Bangkok on April 6. Other Asian tour dates include Taoyuan, Taiwan (December 8-9) and Singapore (January 19).

Ticketing details for the Hong Kong Mama have yet to be announced.
