China remains on the radar of foreign aviators keen to scout out opportunities in the world’s second-largest economy, with many unfazed by the sector’s prolonged recovery and the dwindling number of expat pilots. Those expats still flying in China hail high job satisfaction and long-term outlook, but they also warn newcomers of competition and that overseas credentials and experiences are losing their acclaimed status. Jang Kwang-chol, an instructor captain with Chengdu Airlines who hails from South Korea, has witnessed from his cockpit the appeal and shifting landscape of one of the world’s largest aviation markets. “I recently posted an article on LinkedIn titled ‘Will China Become a Golden Market for Expat Pilots Again?’, and many have contacted me, expressing strong interest,” he said. “What stood out to me was the enduring interest in China. There seems to be expectation that opportunities there may open up again despite the changes since Covid.” Official data shows a 70 per cent slump in the number of foreign pilots flying in China in 2024 from a pre-pandemic peak. Still, Chinese carriers with a sizeable pool of overseas talent, like Spring Airlines and Hainan Airlines, keep cropping up in discussions on forums popular among trainees and cadets, while agencies like Flight Crew International and Pilot Career Centre list active openings across Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. The biggest draw remains competitive compensation, flexible leave options and the world-class infrastructure of Chinese megacities, providing comfortable living at “reasonable cost”, said a foreign captain with a carrier in Shanghai. But the captain, who declined to be named as he was not authorised to speak to the media, warned that Chinese rules on a pilot’s competence were more rigid and Chinese airlines had become more “picky”. “China today has less fascination with foreigners than before, but a lot of young pilots elsewhere are considering the country,” he said. “The days of work experience at a Western airline automatically landing you a job in China is over … [There is] no easy entry, since competition from Chinese pilots is intensifying and those applying must have incident-free flying histories.” The captain said China had strict operational and training requirements and that any pilots aged 40 or above must undergo medical examinations every six months. “This requires continuous self-discipline, something difficult for some foreigners … Not all can survive in today’s China,” he said. Jang, the Korean captain, said these changes had began before the outbreak of Covid-19 but the years-long pandemic slump, and the current recovery, had fundamentally changed hiring patterns. “Post-Covid recovery has not translated into a recovery in demand for expats amid structural changes: more Chinese pilots and a stronger cost-efficiency focus,” he said. But there is still a niche that can be filled, he added. “On intercontinental routes where domestic training cannot quickly fill the gap, a structural shortage will drive demand for the best overseas talent.” Air China, China Southern Airlines and other carriers continue to post recruitment notices for foreigners, with a clear preference for experience on widebody aircraft or those willing to fly cargo routes. Chinese carriers are also hiring more from South Korea, Brazil and Russia as they outnumber Westerners in China, according to data from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC). This coincides with trends in South Korea, where military pilots switch lanes to operate commercial flights. The country’s air force has said about 900 have left to join airlines in the past decade. Jang said China is a “natural” destination when his compatriots venture beyond home. There were 104 South Korean pilots, more than any other nationality, flying in China in 2024, according to the latest available data from CAAC. Aviation consultant Brian Yang said foreign talent may find career options in China outside the cockpit. “There is demand in specialised aircraft maintenance and engineering in key Chinese hubs, while planemakers like [the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China] look for simulator and flight school instructors when there is a domestic supply crunch.”
