A failed relationship often inspires an artist, as Canto-pop singer-songwriter Justin Lo Ting-wai found out. Lo's new song, Really Want to Say Goodbye, is his first recording in three years.

"Last year on my birthday I had a big fight with my girlfriend. It was the worst birthday ever," Lo said on Monday at the launch of the single. He told lyricist Albert Leung Wai-man about it "and he wrote the lyrics for me as if he could read my mind".

The star shunned show business after relocating to Beijing two years ago, but he recently signed with record label Media Asia Music and has been plotting a comeback.

Last month, Lo flew to Taipei to shoot a music video for the song. Having been away from the camera for a while, he joked that his acting had got rusty. Persistent insomnia has not helped, either.

"Although I only sleep two hours a day, I was still good at lip syncing while filming the music video. But I was not that good at acting and the director wouldn't give me a break."

Living in Beijing helped him make new friends, Lo said.
