More than 100 guests turned out to congratulate veteran local photographer Chan Fook-lai on his new photo book at Wan Chai's Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Chan, although 96 years old and wheelchair-bound, made a personal appearance at the book launch and gala dinner on Thursday. Chan has been in the trade for more than 60 years and co-founded the Chinese Photographic Association of Hong Kong in 1958.

His businessman son, Chan King-hung, made a speech at the ceremony and recalled how as a child he accompanied his father on various trips into the mountains on the mainland.

"There were no cable cars back then. We would camp out in the mountains for four or five days to get the perfect shot," he said.

Guests included sports and culture sector lawmaker Ma Fung-kwok, businessman Jose Yu Sun-say and former home affairs secretary David Lan Hong-tsung.
