Hong Kong fashion students pay tribute to fabric bazaar set for demolition
Organised by the Hong Kong Design Institute, Pang Chai – Treasure in the Bazaar: The Fabric Hunting Journey is a tribute to the Yen Chow Street Hawker Bazaar in Sham Shui Po
A much-loved fabric market in Sham Shui Po that’s earmarked for demolition is the subject of a new exhibition.
“Pang Chai – Treasure in the Bazaar: The Fabric Hunting Journey” looks at the Yen Chow Street Hawker Bazaar, also known as Pang Chai market – a warren of stalls that is being bulldozed to make way for public housing.

Organised by the Hong Kong Design Institute’s department of fashion and image design, the exhibition at St James’ Settlement in Wan Chai is open to the public from March 30 to April 6.
For more than 40 years the Yen Chow Street Hawker Bazaar has been the go-to place for fashion designers and students, with more than 100 stalls offering a wide variety of fabrics.
“This exhibition will bring together students and alumni to develop a fashion collection and create artefacts in appreciation of the local fashion culture, weaving the scattered pieces together to form a memorable story,” says the institute’s Elita Lam.
