Five things we hate about taking a Hong Kong taxi
Are bad experiences in cabs in the city becoming more common? These are our pet peeves about the bad apples behind the wheel who tarnish the industry’s image
There’s hardly a Hongkonger who hasn’t taken a taxi ride at one time or another. And just like us, you’ve probably had good experiences and bad. Lately, though, in our experience the bad has outweighed the good. No wonder ride-sharing services such as Uber have spotted an opportunity in Hong Kong.
Here are our top five reasons for thinking twice about taking a Hong Kong taxi:
1. The inside of the cab smells like the driver’s (bad) breath, or his dinner, and you can’t wind down the window because the handle’s missing or broken
2. The driver rants incessantly to no one in particular about the government
3. You get into the back of the cab and sink down half a metre.
4. Your driver insists you listen to him sing some Cantonese opera during your ride.
5. His driving skills make you feel like you’re in a chase scene from a film – he throws you, and everything in your shopping bags, from one side to another while turning corners, and brakes about 10 times every 100 metres.
