2017’s game of the year is Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Title also picked up the prizes for best direction and best action or adventure at the annual Game Awards held in Los Angeles

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild won the top prize at The Game Awards 2017 in Los Angeles on Thursday.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was named game of the year at The Game Awards 2017 on Thursday, beating out tough competition from Persona 5, Horizon Zero Dawn, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Super Mario Odyssey .

The Nintendo title also picked up the awards for best game direction and best action or adventure at the annual event, held in Los Angeles on Thursday.

Other big winners this year include Cuphead , a run-and-gun action game from Studio MDHR, which took the awards for best art direction and best debut indie game; and Melina Juergens, whose day job is a video editor and won the title for best performance for her debut role in Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, which was also named “game for impact” – the award given for a “thought provoking game with a profound pro-social meaning or message”.

The quirky but much-hyped Japanese RPG Persona 5 walked away with only one award, for the best role playing game, and lost out to Zelda for the game of the year title.
