Five must-see contemporary art exhibitions in Hong Kong, plus three in Macau
- Summer solo exhibitions in Hong Kong include videos, paintings, sculptures and installations
- The Macau galleries are showing multimedia exhibitions, and collections of ceramics
Summer is usually the time when commercial art galleries and spaces in Hong Kong either go into hiatus or throw together “best of” group exhibitions that showcase old works by their artists.
This year some have decided to do things differently by hosting major solo shows that are actually worth checking out. Here are five contemporary art exhibitions across the city that you won’t want to miss in the next few weeks.
Harland Miller
You might have come across his witty take on vintage Penguin paperback covers before, but for his first solo outing in Hong Kong, British artist Harland Miller has created something more original – a series of book covers that features a single word that is not immediately apparent. By overlaying the letters the word appears more a pattern, motif or a graphic composition.

According to the exhibition notes, Miller draws on a wide range of cultural references in these works, including 1960s and ’70s graphic design and the bold, upbeat covers of post-war psychology books. By using his own name as author within the image, Miller opens up a third space where the artist becomes his own alter ego.
“Through a process of formal painterly exploration, fact and fiction become blurred, creating a visual rupture that provokes, questions and draws attention to the inherent possibilities of language within the visual field’,” say the notes.
