It’s not every day you see renowned photographer Wing Shya’s stylised Hong Kong imagery outside galleries and magazines, let alone printed across skateboard decks. A vibrant online exhibition and charity auction offers an opportunity to view and buy skateboard decks decorated by artists, designers and celebrities. To celebrate its 150th anniversary, the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals in partnership with Sotheby’s auction house is organising the Skateboard Deck Art Online Exhibition cum Charity Auction. To be held from August 18 to 28, the auction aims to raise funds to support the artistic and musical education of the group’s students. The sale features nearly 60 lots, and the artists invited to design works for the auction are from Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China. Highlights include Wing Shya’s Hong Kong: Fictional/Real series (2004/2020); Andy Hung’s playful Lego imagery in Build (2020); The Old Times of Hong Kong (2020) painted by Lee Chi Ching and featuring a more classical aesthetic; and Wong Ting-fung’s colourful abstract In Between Words (2020). Comic artist Joseph Wong’s How’s Your Day (2020) serves as an ode to his father, the comic book artist Alfonso Wong of Old Master Q fame. Founded in 1870, Tung Wah Group of Hospitals is one of the largest charitable organisations in Hong Kong.
