Hongkongers shortlisted for the world’s biggest photography competition

Shots from three local photographers among those picked from more than 230,000 images from 186 countries

Three Hongkongers have been shortlisted for the world’s biggest photography competition.

Tugo Cheng (open travel), Wai Lam-cheng (youth portraits) and Patrick Willocq (professional portraiture) have been shortlisted for the 2016 Sony World Photography Awards.

This year’s competition received a record number of entries – 230,103 images from 186 countries, with entries from Hong Kong up 156 per cent from 2015. The total number of entries received since the launch of the awards in 2007 has surpassed one million images.

The winners will be announced in London on April 21.

Shortlisted photographers will have their work shown in London as part of the awards exhibition in April and May and be published in the 2016 edition of the Sony World Photography Awards book.

Wai Lam-cheng’s Staring at ... has been nominated in the youth portraits category.
The image by 19-year-old Wai Lam-cheng – an engineering student at Hong Kong Polytechnic University – is called Staring at… and captures a girl in a park in Hong Kong.
Patrick Willocq’s photo of an Ekondas pygmy from his Walé 2ème regard series has been nominated for professional portraiture.
The image by permanent Hong Kong resident Willocq, originally from France, is from a series, Walé, 2ème regard, that feature Ekondas pygmies from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
