With the 61st Venice Biennale set to open on May 9, the two artists representing Hong Kong recently shared how they will interpret the overarching theme of the event – “In Minor Keys” – by slowing down time and appreciating the beauty of the ordinary.
For their joint presentation, Angel Hui Hoi-kiu and Kingsley Ng Siu-king have been working with a curatorial team from the Hong Kong Museum of Art (HKMOA), which this year has taken over from the M+ museum to lead the Hong Kong collateral event at the major international art festival.

HKMOA’s director, Maria Mok Kar-wing, says the team wants “to fit in with the musical theme”.

She reveals that the working title of Hui and Ng’s presentation is “Fermata”, adding that the musical notation that indicates the holding of a note longer than its normal value gives space for individual expression. “It is up to the player to decide how long to pause for,” Mok says, “and to decide on the rhythm of the phrasing.”

Both artists aim to slow down the pace of those who enter the exhibition venue on Campo della Tana, with a joint site-specific presentation that transforms everyday Hong Kong objects into a “concerto” of light, shadow and sound.
