In the Roman world, there was an official religion based on the Italian version of the ancient Greek pantheon of Zeus and his fractious family on Olympus. The philosophy of stoicism was still fashionable, but there was also a growing cult of the emperor himself: upon his death, Augustus - founder of the empire - was proclaimed a god.

Egyptian goddess Isis had temples in most cities of the Roman empire from Gaul to the Near East; in Judaea, the sore thumb of the empire, the inhabitants were loyal to a jealous god who did not tolerate the existence of any other deity. But most cults were accommodating, and could be mixed and matched.
