Hong Kong Disneyland stages Halloween musical filled with its most evil characters
- Ursula from The Little Mermaid, Cruella De Vil from 101 Dalmatians, and Gaston from Beauty and the Beast are among the wicked characters involved
- The colourful show, called Let’s Get Wicked, runs until November 10
What would be your ultimate Disney nightmare? Being trapped inside the Beast’s Castle in Beauty and the Beast? Or have the old witch in Snow White knocking on your door?
For Randy Wojcik, the mastermind behind a new Halloween-themed musical at Hong Kong Disneyland, it was trying to pick just five villains from the vast repertoire of Disney animations to front Let’s Get Wicked. The task has proved both challenging and frustrating, he says.
“That was a fun challenge, but frustrating in the sense that … I really like Maleficent [from Sleeping Beauty] and I really like Evil Queen [from Snow White]. But they did not quite make it when we started putting the show together [when] talking about the music and the costumes and the lighting,” explains the creative director of entertainment and costuming at Hong Kong Disneyland Resort.
“We just felt really strongly that these five villains were the ones to showcase in Let's Get Wicked.”
So who made it to the party? Ursula from The Little Mermaid, Dr. Facilier from The Princess and the Frog, Cruella De Vil from 101 Dalmatians, Mother Gothel from Tangled, and Gaston from Beauty and the Beast. Each character is matched with distinctive costumes, props, choreography, and lighting effects that fit their terrifying personalities.
