The lingering impact of the Covid-19 pandemic has been felt in all quarters this year, not least in Hollywood, where there has been a notable lack of blockbuster spectacle on offer to film-goers – Top Gun: Maverick notwithstanding.

Fortunately, James Cameron has swooped in at the eleventh hour with his long-awaited sequel Avatar: The Way of Water, which looks set to monopolise cinema screens throughout the holiday period.

But what is in store for the new year? We take a look at the most anticipated releases, from awards contenders to franchise favourites, set to open this winter (opening dates are for Hong Kong).

1. The Fabelmans

Veteran director Steven Spielberg presents his most personal film to date, inspired by his own family and adolescence in the 1950s and ’60s, which is hotly tipped to be a major awards contender this season.

On the one hand a portrait of his parents’ fractured marriage, as portrayed by Paul Dano and Michelle Williams, the film also charts young Sammy Fabelman’s growing love affair with cinema and his desire to become a filmmaker. (Opens December 29)

2. Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre

Jason Statham and Hugh Grant go head-to-head in Guy Ritchie’s stylish spy caper set on the Italian riviera.
