The 41st Hong Kong Film Awards ceremony is set to return to its usual stage in the Hong Kong Cultural Centre after three years away due to the coronavirus outbreak in the city.
True-crime mystery/court drama The Sparring Partner scored a remarkable 16 nominations to lead the field, the organisers announced at a press conference on Thursday.
Based on a 2013 double murder that shocked Hong Kong, the highly stylised film marked the feature directing debut of Ho Cheuk-tin, and is produced by filmmaker Philip Yung Tsz-kwong, whose own murder drama Port of Call was a big winner at the 2016 Hong Kong Film Awards.

Rounding out the best picture race are the Louis Koo Tin-lok-produced sci-fi blockbuster Warriors of Future, Wai Ka-fai’s unhinged police thriller Detective vs Sleuths, and poignant working-class drama The Narrow Road.
Mabel Cheung Yuen-ting’s controversial documentary To My Nineteen-year-old Self was also nominated, but has since been pulled from the best film category by Ying Wa Girls’ School following claims that the young stars did not properly consent to having the film screened publicly.

Nominees of the current edition are chosen from a concentrated pool of only 33 contending films released in 2022, the first four months of which saw Hong Kong cinemas shut down as a consequence of Covid-19 control measures.
