The fantasy board game Dungeons & Dragons has already spawned an animated TV series, a blockbuster starring Jeremy Irons and two made-for-TV/DVD outings.
Yet Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, the new film by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, betters them all with the right balance of humour, action and fan service.
Chris Pine stars as Edgin, a charming thief currently residing in prison with his friend Holga (Michelle Rodriguez). Their incarceration is down to Forge (Hugh Grant), a treasure-hungry con man who has forged a partnership with a powerful Red Wizard (Daisy Head).
He’s also got Edgin’s daughter Kira (Chloe Coleman), convincing her that her father has all but abandoned her.
After a daring escape, Edgin and Holga team up with wizard Simon (Justice Smith) and the pointy-eared druid Doric (Sophia Lillis) to bring Forge down. It’s a quest that brings them into the orbit of the brave and righteous hero Xenk (Regé-Jean Page), an expert with the blade.
