ReviewThe Flash movie review: Ezra Miller reprises superhero role in DC Studios’ multiverse crossover film that lacks emotion

  • Ezra Miller returns as The Flash, but the actor’s interpretation of Barry Allen no longer provides comic relief, instead becoming increasingly insufferable
  • The cameo from Michael Keaton (Batman) is fun, and Sasha Calle livens things up as Supergirl, but neither were enough to lift this contrived story

With seismic regime change looming at DC Studios, Andy Muschietti’s The Flash is a desperate last hurrah for its current cinematic universe.

Following Marvel’s resounding success with Spider-Man: No Way Home, DC attempts its own multiverse crossover event featuring a host of familiar faces, both past and present. Where the Spider-Man film thrived on genuine nostalgia, however, The Flash resembles little more than a contrived corporate counterpart .

At the centre of The Flash’s failings is star Ezra Miller, who has, in recent months, become embroiled in a series of increasingly bizarre and troubling scandals. Sadly, the actor proves equally problematic on-screen.

Miller’s interpretation of Barry Allen as a dithering, socially inept millennial no longer provides the welcome comic relief it did in Justice League. Given centre stage, the character becomes increasingly insufferable – especially when Muschietti gives us two of them.
