A new instalment in the Alien movie franchise that is full of surprises and captures the feel of the original is hard to look past for cinema fans this weekend, but there are two great comedies to consider as well. Talking of comedy, there is also an engaging Korean romantic comedy series to stream.
1. Alien: Romulus
Set between Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986), Don’t Breathe director Fede Álvarez’s smart take captures the feel of the original films quite superbly, as a ragtag group looks to steal from a derelict space station. It just so happens that this station, the Renaissance, is infested with xenomorphs – the well-known hostile extraterrestrials from the franchise.
Starring Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla) as Rain – a young woman every bit as capable as Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley from the original – and David Jonsson as android Andy, the film features plenty of surprises from Álvarez, who truly understands what makes the Alien franchise tick. 2. Pilot
This Korean movie is a cross-dressing comedy that is also sharp and tactful – the writers have identified where its premise might be deemed problematic and have tackled those issues head on.

Jo Jung-suk (Hospital Playlist) stars as a celebrity pilot who, after disgracing himself with a drunken, sexist outburst, looks to revive his career by pretending to be a woman to work for a rival airline.
Pilot is less a tale of deception than one of upending the status quo and highlighting a gender imbalance that persists even in an era of supposedly unprecedented progressiveness. That it is also hilarious throughout only helps lift the film to greater heights. Read our full review
