The “ugly sneaker” trend spawned by Balenciaga has now become the “dad sneaker” trend because it’s not politically correct to call something ugly, even if, to some, they undoubtedly are.

It’s all part of the industry’s recent mining of the street for “authenticity” which has, among other things, seen skate brand Supreme create a number of upmarket sneaker crossovers, luxury streetwear fashion designer Kim Jones succeed Kris van Assche as artistic director at Dior Homme, and Off-White founder Virgil Abloh installed at Louis Vuitton.

Like streetwear and athleisure, the dad sneaker trend trawls nostalgia for its credibility. And from Kendall Jenner to Hailey Baldwin, the shoes have their share of celebrity supporters. Bella Hadid even stole the show at the Dior Homme autumn-winter 2018 menswear show in Paris with her lacy bra and dad sneaker combo.

While the dad sneaker is typically white, they come in all shapes and forms. Here are 10 pairs to check out.
