Five foundations with a wide shade range for fair skinned and darker skinned women in Hong Kong
Hong Kong is not the easiest place to find suitable foundation if your skin tone differs at all from the ‘norm’. But these five make-up brands provide a decent range, and they are high-quality products
If your skin is either very fair or darker than medium beige then it can be tough to find your perfect foundation shade in Hong Kong.
While many beauty brands – both Asian and Western – have a range of shades that cater to more people, few available in Hong Kong provide a decent selection.
Thankfully, though, some do exist – check these out before giving up entirely.
Most people buy this brand for the adorable packaging, but its formulas are actually also worth the price tag.
The brand’s Hello Happy Soft Blur Foundation (released in July) is a light to medium buildable coverage foundation that feels exceptionally light on the skin and diffuses the telltale signs of imperfection.
The product originally comes in 12 shades, with Hong Kong carrying 10. While not perfect, the available range – from No.1 fair cool to No.10 deep warm – is much better than those that only cater to the porcelain-to-beige range, and the formula suits most skin types.
Hourglass’ Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation Stick is available in Hong Kong in all 32 shades, from the lightest Blanc to the deepest Espresso. Providing high coverage and easy to blend, this is the perfect foundation for someone with discolouration, redness and secrets to hide.
However, if you have textured skin – breakouts, bumpiness or dry patches – this may not be the best option. The stick gives a natural finish, but works best on those with naturally smooth-ish skin.
Make Up For Ever
The Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Invisible Cover Foundation is a cult favourite and a staple in many a make-up artist’s tool kit.
A gorgeous medium coverage foundation that is buildable, it glides over both texture and pigmentation like a dream. It comes in 40 shades, but Hong Kong only carries 19. However, those 19 shades still cover a reasonable spectrum and most Asian skin tones will be able to find a match. It’s not good enough for such a diverse city, but it’s not a bad start either.
Fenty’s Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation can be found at Harvey Nichols in all 40 shades. So whether you’re fairer than Tilda Swinton in The Chronicles of Narnia or would fit in perfectly in Black Panther, you’re bound to find a shade that complements you.
The foundation is also incredibly blendable and buildable, and leaves your skin looking like velvet. Best of all, it will last – even in Hong Kong’s heat and humidity.
There are no two ways about this: Too Faced’s Born This Way foundation is not for oily skin. At all. Avoid it like the plague unless you want to look like a hot mess. For normal to dry skin, however, it will make you look like you were born with smooth, velvety skin.
The foundation is available on the Sephora Hong Kong website. While it originally comes in 24 shades, five are already sold out. Luckily, the 19 shades left on the site that you can still purchase cover a very wide range that will work on many skin tones. In fact, the available range is still more extensive than what is typically available in stores in Hong Kong. How sad is that?
So if you have a normal or drier skin type, this full-coverage, coconut-water-infused foundation may be just the thing for you.
