New York bars and restaurants: the hottest new places to see and be seen at during fashion week

New bars and restaurants open in the Big Apple every day, but where are trendsetters like the Kardashians going? We give the lowdown on New York’s hottest recent openings for fashion week visitors

This week, thousands of fashionable people are due to descend on New York to attend the spring-summer 2019 shows, with even more tuning in on social media.

But it’s not all hair, make-up and strobe lighting. In between runway shows and presentations, the fashion set will be killing time and socialising at Manhattan’s best new food and beverage establishments.

Westbourne

An all-day cafe with a healthy and charitable bent, Westbourne serves up California-inspired dishes in a kitsch, 1960s setting.

Founder Camilla Marcus describes the menu as “accidentally vegetarian” with an emphasis on local and organic produce. You will find seasonal rotating ales and kombucha on tap, along with a multitude of grain bowls, vegetable smash, and coconut chia pudding topped with rose halva that are all served from 8am-10pm, seven days a week.

A portion of every purchase goes directly to the Robin Hood Foundation, which helps fund a local charity called The Door to train underprivileged youth to work in the hospitality industry. www.westbourne.com

Primo’s

In the back of The Frederick Hotel, Primo’s is a bar with a classic New York twist.

Interior designer and model Camilla Deterre has dreamt up a dimly lit, mid-century modern interior in which jewel-toned velvet upholstery and a slick lacquered bar serve as a stylish backdrop to a dirty martini or aperol spritz. On the walls, a sprawling geometric mural painted by Conie Vallese provides ambience and a nod to late-night dancing in the seventies.

You’ll find a mix of hotel guests and local business suits at the front bar, but those in the know head directly to the private room in the back den. www.primostribeca.com

Ada’s Place

Ada’s Place only opened in March but is already drawing a sizeable crowd every night.

It is a casual-ish bar serving 250 different types of spirits, as well as informal American dishes like burgers with black truffle, and fried chicken with lemon, rosemary and fennel pollen.

The concept comes from the same owners of the Charlie Bird on King Street. The chic emerald green and polished gold interiors, with accents of marble and mahogany, come courtesy of designer Ken Fulk, while the menu was devised by chef Ryan Hardy. www.legacyrecordsnyc.com

Peachy’s

Peachy’s manages to fuse two opposing elements seamlessly and without feeling gimmicky: it combines health-conscious superfoods with hard alcohol and partying.

Nestled just under street level, it is the latest venture from duo Jeff Lam and Eddy Buckingham, who own the fusion restaurant Chinese Tuxedo on the floor above.

On the menu you will find Instagram-worthy rainbow cocktails loaded with colourful fresh ingredients like turmeric and beetroot, and boosted with adaptogens like astragalus root.

The Four Seasons

New Yorkers waited with bated breath for the new location of The Four Seasons to open this August, and let out a collective sigh of relief as soon as they set foot inside.

The iconic Manhattan landmark left its original Philip Johnson-designed space in 2016 for a new address on 48th Street. True to its prior iteration, the menu zooms in on seasonal, American ingredients, prepared with classic techniques.

The freshly minted interior, however, is a far cry from the former space that Johnson created in the late 1950s. Brazilian architect Isay Weinfeld has devised a luxurious floor plan that is both time-honoured and conceptual. www.fourseasonsrestaurant.com
