Muji, Sandro, vintage Rolexes: Hong Kong finance professional Justin Ng opens his wardrobe
When Justin Ng finds something he really likes, he doesn’t hold back: with one pair of slim-fit Acne Studio jeans, he owns them in eight different colours
Justin Ng was a banker before helping to launch Uber in Hong Kong and then working at one of Hong Kong’s top event-production companies.
He is now focusing on various projects, including his latest venture, a new kind of ATM that he is developing in China.
We take a look inside the polished wardrobe of one of the city’s most stylish men about town.
What Ng wears for work
“In my previous career as a banker I wore formal suits every day. Now that I’m running my own businesses it’s nice to wear clothes that are more casual and comfortable.”
Ng wears a pink denim jacket by Sandro, white T-shirt by Muji, blue 484 slim-fit chinos by J. Crew, and white Original Achilles leather sneakers by Common Projects.
“I have this Sandro denim jacket in multiple colours. I really like the fit and when I find something I like, I’ll get it in multiple colours. I wear these Common Projects all the time, as you can tell by the marks. I don’t mind that they’re a bit dirty – I think it’s cooler that way.
“I also have a collection of vintage Rolexes. Some are ‘borrowed’ from my father’s collection, some I bought at auctions. My first Daytona was a high school graduation gift from my dad, so that carries special sentimental value to me. Then I bought my gold Datejust when I got my first bonus from Goldman Sachs back when I was 21.”
What Ng wears for play
“I bought this Topman shirt to wear at this year’s Rugby Sevens. It was meant to be a joke or costume, but I like the print a lot and it’s fun to wear when I’m off-duty. These Acne Studio jeans are from a boutique in Ginza. Acne jeans can be hard to find so I get excited when I see them. I have these jeans in eight colours.”
Ng wears a tropical print shirt by Topman, grey T-shirt by Muji, slim-fit jeans by Acne Studios, and black leather-trimmed canvas and suede sneakers by Vans.
What Ng wears for travel
“For my family office job I’m in Singapore a few times a year to meet with bankers and fund managers and for my start-up I’m in China quite a lot for factory visits. I’m also about to fly to Ukraine for the first time to visit our software programmers, so I like to pack lightweight layers, meaning plain T-shirts, denim shirts, cotton jackets and jeans, and avoid packing dress shirts and blazers as they don’t travel well.”
Ng wears a brown suede jacket by Ami, white T-shirt by Muji, cotton-corduroy shirt by Officine Generale, skinny-fit distressed denim by Frame, and brown Chelsea boots by Saint Laurent.
“I’m a huge fan of the Parisian labels Ami, Sandro and Officine Generale – their clothes are cool and not too trendy, tailored, and wearable.”
“For sunglasses I like to buy Revé by René – a brand founded by a close friend of mine, Rene Chu. I love that they’re designed to fit Asian faces perfectly. I also collect skate decks, even though I don’t skateboard, and recently bought the limited-edition Saint Laurent deck when they did a pop-up at Colette in Paris, right before the boutique closed its doors.”
Simple-use film camera by Lomography, skate deck by Saint Laurent x Arkaic Concept, vintage Submariner watch by Rolex, gold BPM sunglasses by Revé by René, Le 7 18-Karat Gold, Le 15 Polished Sterling Silver and Le 7 Brushed Sterling Silver Cuffs by Le Gramme (available at Mr Porter), and Mister Marvelous fragrance by Byredo (available at Mr Porter).
