Make-up artist to the Kardashians, Hadids and Ariana Grande on starting out, going bust and his rise up in the beauty business

  • Vietnamese-American make-up artist Patrick Ta, 29, talks about seeing his first business fail, and taking inspiration from social media to carve a new career
  • Ta’s work is instantly recognisable, says his business partner. It’s something they’ve built on to launch a curated range of make-up products under his name

Patrick Ta had just finished working on the brows of several women, artfully shaping and brushing, and bringing a succession of wows from them.

“See how it opens everything up?” Ta says to one of his models, who smiles back, her brows now almost upright, defined and boasting a subtle sheen.

Ta, 29, was at the tail end of a champagne brunch at his headquarters in Burbank, California, which he hosted to celebrate the launch of his first brow product, Major Brow, the latest in a successful line he debuted last April.

Before then, Ta was known – and to a great extent still is – as a make-up artist extraordinaire, the man behind the flawless looks of women such as the Hadid and Kardashian sisters, Arianna Grande and Chrissy Teigen.

He is also a popular influencer and beauty ambassador for brands such as La Mer, with some 1.8 million followers on Instagram. When he launched his first products, a trio of shimmering body oils, they sold out four times in succession.
