When designer Phillip Lim, founder of fashion label 3.1 Phillip Lim, was approached by hair and body care company Aveda to collaborate on the brand’s 2021 holiday collection, he did not want to create something seasonal that people would forget about right after the holidays.

The new range, which includes gift packaging and hair accessories such as scrunchies, a hair towel and a comb, is meant to “transcend the holidays”.

“It was important that when the lights go off and the Christmas tree is taken down, the print and the gift boxes can be used as decor and that they keep living with you and you keep reusing them,” Lim says in a video interview. “We didn’t want to approach it where you tear the gift wrapping and then throw it away.

“It’s not just about the products, which are essential tools for self-care and for honouring a beauty ritual for yourself.”

Founded in Minneapolis in 1978, Aveda was championing environmental responsibility in beauty long before words such as “sustainability” and “eco-friendly’’ were part of our daily lexicon.
