As wedding costs skyrocket because of inflation, one California couple’s efforts to keep their special day below US$500 have gone viral. According to US television show Good Morning America ( GMA ), Kiara and Joel Brokenbrough of Los Angeles decided to be “as minimal as possible” when planning their nuptials, including purchasing a US$47 wedding dress from Shein , a digital retailer similar to Fashion Nova. “I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on a dress because I had the mindset I’m gonna wear this one time for a few hours,” Kiara told the outlet. Kiara posted videos of the low-cost wedding and dress to TikTok , Instagram and YouTube where they amassed more than 1 million views. Users on the platform congratulated Kiara on the beautiful wedding, and some felt inspired to have a cost-friendly marriage ceremony themselves. For the wedding, the couple found a free location off a California motorway, and they did not provide food or drinks for guests at the reception. To further lower costs, her family gifted them flowers and a runner for the special occasion, according to GMA . The guest count was less than 75 people, and the couple invited only 30 to 40 close friends and relatives, television channel Fox 11 reported. “The people we have there, they understood the assignment, they understood the things that we were trying to do, and they really supported us,” Kiara said.
