Young local designers, a cosmopolitan vibe and strong local identity make for a growing choice of vintage and indie boutiques, and high-end shops, in the Cambodian capital.

Local Designers

The majority of local designers are either self-taught or learnt from elders in the absence of formal training. However, the new wave of designers are the first graduates from international university fashion degrees, helping to push the fashion scene forward.

Kosal Ou's threads are creating waves on the catwalks. Having spent nine years working in garment factories, he decided it was time to use his skills to create clothing he loves. About 18 months ago, he launched men's boutique Kool as U (141 Street 19), and prides himself on creating wearable and affordable apparel. Bold prints are teamed with block colours, daring jackets and slim-fit trousers. He has recently branched out into womens wear.

Pkha Kn'Jay (14a Street 242) is headed by Thavy Pich, who creates ranges of women's clothes in predominantly cotton and linen. With fresh and classical designs, Thavy, who learnt his craft from friends, the internet and fashion magazines, draws his inspiration from his favourite eras — the '60s and '70s — and gives them a modern spin. The result is a collection of sweeping floor-length dresses, colourful pleated skirts and fitted patterned shirts. Thavy and Ou also offer personalised tailoring services
