Louis Vuitton and Chinese artist Xu Bing join forces
The collaboration has produced a spectacular trunk now on show in Hong Kong, and which will be auctioned later this year by Sotheby’s in Beijing
Louis Vuitton has collaborated with Chinese contemporary artist Xu Bing to create a trunk which will be auctioned by Sotheby’s in Beijing later this year.
The trunk, on display at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre until April 6, took two years to make and features a script in a hybrid creation – English and Mandarin – on the luxury brand’s signature monogram print. The words were inspired by a poem In Antiquity by modern Chinese poet, Zhai Yongming.
The trunk houses a knife, carving station, inks and a penholder, traditional tools hand-picked by Xu.
Louis Vuitton has a long history of collaborations with artists, its first dating back to 1927 then the luxury French label worked with French artist Rene Gimpel. Since then it has worked with artists including Japan’s Takashi Murakami and Yayoi Kusama and British artist Damien Hirst.
