Stars take a shine to the metallic look at Golden Globes, and for some it’s not all white on the night

Fashion editor Jing Zhang picks the winners and losers on the red carpet at the season’s first major film awards

On a star-studded red carpet at the Golden Globes in Los Angeles, actors and actresses shone in some daring sartorial choices, with sequins and metallic looks prominent. We loved breakout A-lister Ruth Negga’s futuristic looking Louis Vuitton silver-sequinned zipped gown. Some, like Sofia Vergara and Nicole Kidman (in Alexander McQueen), quite literally shone in glorious shimmering silver metallic gowns.

Thandie Newton gets points for her take – a simple off-the-shoulder white dress with a sparkling rust-coloured sequinned all along the bottom. Emma Stone, who won the award for best actress, looked stunning in a nude, sheer Valentino gown covered in silver stars.

Some went with vivid hues (yellows and pinks were popular) that made bold, elegant statements; Reese Witherspoon and Viola Davis both looked classic in buttercup yellow, old-style Hollywood gowns. Kerry Washington’s fitted yellow lace dress was a triumph, and Zoe Saldana looked pretty in Gucci’s feminine pink frills. Hailee Steinfeld looked grown up in a custom-made Vera Wang draped lavender gown.

There was a Hellenic slant to the regal pure-white dresses Drew Barrymore, Gillian Anderson and Kirsten Wiig wore, and even to the graceful one-shouldered grey number Anna Kendrick wore or the simple pink nude gown of Gwendoline Christie (who plays Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones).

Of the men, not all took the classic approach. Cuba Gooding Junior sported a tartan tuxedo, while Pharrell Williams’ long white jacket drew eyeballs. Jonah Hill looked trimmer than usual, and took a more casual approach, going tie-less in his black suit and in bright white trainers.

There were losers as well as winners on the red carpet. Parts of Game of Throne’s actress Sophie Turner’s outfit worked, but it was a confusing, asymmetrical mish-mash of an outfit. Janelle Monae’s pouffy black and white prom dress disaster was inelegant, while Sarah Jessica Parker’s white dress was all volume and just not very chic. The very pretty Karrueche Tran (famous for being Chris Brown’s ex) made a serious mistake with her hot-pink ruched satin strapless dress, which was almost comically 1980s in style.
