Everyone is talking about velvet this season, but the catwalks have also been awash in satin, which is the perfect party-dress fabric. It may have a 1970s vibe but satin has just the right amount of sheen, especially in jewel tones such as red or blue. Whether you opt for a shirt or dress, choose a lightweight material like charmeuse, which drapes well on the body.

2. A shiny cover-up
A shiny coat or jacket can instantly transform a little black dress from boring to fabulous. Metallic leather jackets create a rock ‘n’ roll vibe and work for both day or night. A vinyl trench is sexy and edgy. If you really want to make a statement, opt for a tuxedo jacket in a shimmering material such as brocade.

3. Glitter accessories
Dorothy isn’t the only one who deserves a pair of sparkling shoes! Brands from Miu Miu to Saint Laurent have covered their accessories in glitter this season. Glitter may add a playful touch to your outfit, but avoid too many colours. The effect also works best on clean silhouettes such as a rectangular clutch or pointed toe pump (anything round will just look like a Christmas ornament).

4. An embellished dress
Dresses with bling were a big trend on recent catwalks and featured embellishments ranging from metallic threadwork to crystals. In this case, less is more, so choose dresses or tops with subtle details such as sequinned borders or a smattering of crystal studs. Paillettes of all shapes and sizes also add a modern touch. Be sure to keep your accessories understated so your outfit really shines.

5. A pair of decorative heels
Make a statement from the feet up. This season, the attention has moved to the heels, which have become works of arts in themselves. Choose anything from baroque embellishments, gold studs, colourful strass and pearl-covered heels of all shapes and sizes for a look that is fresh and contemporary.

6. A mirrored leather handbag
An embellished clutch is so predictable, which is why reflective leather is preferable instead. Fashion is all about looking into the future and holographic leather looks contemporary thanks to its high-shine finish. The effect works best on structured, boxy styles, preferably in gold or silver. It can also double as a mirror when you need to touch up your lipstick!

7. Vintage-inspired jewels
It may be tempting to pile it on, but don’t wear your jewels all at once. Choose one statement piece, be it a pair of chandelier earrings, cocktail ring or a bold necklace. Brooches are fun and unexpected. And instead of gobstopper-sized crystals, opt for vintage-inspired pieces that could pass for heirlooms. Stay away from bold colours or you’ll look like a walking Christmas tree.

8. Couture sneakers
Get noticed on the dance floor in a pair of stylish (and comfortable) designer sneakers. This wardrobe essential has been given the luxe treatment in recent years and comes in a range of shimmering fabrics including metallic leather, brocade and jacquard. Since you’re letting your feet make a statement, don’t be afraid to mix and match your embellishments. The more the merrier.

9. A reflective skirt
Never underestimate the power of a separate. Skirts can mix and match with almost anything, so make them party-appropriate by choosing a style made from festive fabrics such as lamé, lurex or even latex. If you are going to let your skirt take the spotlight, offset it with something cool and casual on top such as a crisp white shirt or oversized jumper, a look popularised by Valentino.

10. A casual sequin dress
The best thing about the holidays is that the usual style rules no longer apply. Take cues from street-style stars and bring out your sequins during the day.
