Damon stars as Mark Watney, a botanist left behind on a mission to Mars.

Having played a marooned astronaut in Christopher Nolan's Interstellar, Damon has a similar, if more substantial role in The Martian.

Damon's character tracks the days he spends trapped alone. 

"Everything he does makes total sense ... It's all completely grounded in science," says Damon of his character.

"It was great working with Jessica; unfortunately we only got two or three scenes together," says Damon of working with Jesssica Chastain (second from left).
