1. Amy

Quite probably the best documentary you will see this year, Senna director Asif Kapadia’s portrait of Amy Winehouse is also a heart-breaking account of how a music genius succumbed to addiction. (Opens on October 8)

2. Evil Dead II

Horror movies had never been this hilarious – and satirical – when writer-director Sam Raimi and his creative team remade his gory debut into this 1987 slapstick classic. (October 10, part of Cine Fan programme)

3. The Martian

A space travel drama that’s as positive as it comes, Ridley Scott’s excellent adaptation of Andy Weir’s geeky novel follows a stranded astronaut (Matt Damon) who can’t seem to stop having fun on Mars. (Now showing)

4. The Walk

Previously chronicled in the documentary Man on Wire, the 1974 walk by high-wire artist Philippe Petit between the twin towers is scrupulously recreated in Robert Zemeckis’ breathtaking 3D spectacle. (Opens on October 8)

5. I Am Somebody

Veteran Hong Kong director Derek Yee Tung-sing pays tribute to the film extras populating Zhejiang province’s Hengdian World Studios with empathy – and more than a touch of melancholy. (Opens on October 8)
