1. Son of Saul

The senseless horror of the Holocaust is given the experimental psychodrama treatment in this year’s best-foreign-language Oscar winner, which follows a death camp inmate’s stoic attempt to retain a trace of humanity in the midst of the genocide. (Opens on March 3)

Brie Larson in Room.

2. Room

A new star is born in Brie Larson – formerly a moderately popular singer – who won the lead actress Oscar for her unforgettable part in this gripping drama, which revolves around a young mother who has long been held captive with her son inside a tiny shed. (Opens on March 3)

Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone in Creed.

3. Creed

He may not have won an Oscar, but there’s no denying Sylvester Stallone - playing the mentor of Michael B. Jordan’s emerging boxer - has given his best performance in years with this surprisingly riveting seventh instalment in the Rocky series. (Now showing)

Mark Ruffalo in Spotlight.

4. Spotlight

The best picture Oscar win for this journalism procedural really wasn’t as surprising as all The Revenant hoopla had made it out to be. A firm favourite among critics across various festivals, Tom McCarthy’s film is an important story marvellously told. (Now showing)

Casey Affleck and Michael Raymond-James in a scene from The Finest Hours.

5. The Finest Hours

A fact-based disaster film that oozes old-fashioned narrative charm in spite of an inevitable reliance on CGI effects, this seafaring drama by director Craig Gillespie has definitely made the most of the dramatic 1952 US coastguard rescue operation it’s based on. (Now showing)
