Fresh or reconstituted, pulpy or filtered, fortified or natural - there's more to the world's most popular juice than meets the eye. Janice Leung looks for her favourite squeeze Pure J This is a mere shadow of what a real juice should be. It tastes like water with a wedge of orange squeezed into it, rather than actual fruit juice. Fine strands are visible in the pale orange liquid, but they don't seem to add to the flavour. The only taste that stands out is a relatively high acidity, which is the only redeeming feature of this juice. Its flavours are well balanced between sweet and tart with the slightest tinge of bitterness. All the flavours are relatively subtle. While it doesn't seem watered down, it isn't intensely orange either. HK$30.90, ParknShop, citywide Florida's Natural Premium This brand is packed with fine pulp, which is so well integrated with the liquid that it's almost like a smoothie in texture. More yellow than orange, it has a pleasant flavour, with just the right balance of sweetness and acidity, and only a little bitterness to remind you that this was once real fruit. HK$51, Wellcome, citywide Tropicana Pure Premium 100% Pure Squeezed Orange Juice On first taste, this juice seems thin and watery, but it does contain a smattering of fine pulp that is detectable in each mouthful. It packs quite a punch with its intense sweetness and acidity but tastes rather artificial and lacks the vibrant colour of fresh juice. HK$28.90, Wellcome, citywide
