Getting your goat: four places to eat goat in Hong Kong

Another Lunar New Year has passed but we still can’t get goats - not sheep, mind you, see  http://goo.gl/HO0NvA  - off our minds or, more to the point, our stomachs. While certainly not a popular delicacy in Hong Kong, around the world goat meat is beloved for its gamey flavour and affordability compared its close relative the sheep. We can’t speak to whether eating goat this year is auspicious, but we do know it’s delicious, and with the growing number of Caribbean, African, South Asian, and North African restaurants in the city there are lots of great places to give it a try.

This newish Caribbean hot spot on Hollywood Road boasts authentic island food to go with its modern, predominantly rum-based cocktails.  No chef worth his salt would claim to serve Caribbean food without at least a little goat on the menu, and Chef Kristofor Olbrich’s take on a traditional curry goat served with potatoes and dahl puri roti (HK$100) has become a lunchtime favourite.

Mandy’s

Mandy’s private kitchen, Caribbean bar, and restaurant in Sai Kung has long been the go-to dinner spot for Hongkongers looking for the real deal when it comes to island cuisine. Mandy also does a version of goat curry, this time with a uniquely Trinidadian flair: the young bone in Australian goat is presented under a blanket of thick curry sauce, and served with the traditional accompaniment of rice and peas, and salad.
