Restaurant review: Noodies - mix and match noodles, soup and toppings

Newly opened Sai Ying Pun restaurant lets you create your own fusion meal, with surprising results

Located just a block away from the recently opened Sai Ying Pun MTR station, Noodies has received a lot of hype since opening one month ago. The restaurant doesn’t take reservations but walk-in dining and take away are available.

The order sheet allows guests to create their own meal, including choosing the house-made soup base (pork broth, Thai tom yum or laksa) and several types of noodles. The combinations start at HK$46, depending on the number and type of toppings. Summer specials include cold noodles, noodles with add-on premium toppings (HK$10) and side dishes (HK$15 to HK$30).

First, we tried the pork broth soup base with chicken wings and wonton (HK$46). Although the colours were dull, we loved the taste of the pork broth as it wasn’t too salty. The wontons were delicious, and the chicken wings had a hint of Chinese wine chicken flavour. However, my friend was a little disappointed with the bean sprouts that were hidden under the noodles, which we specifically asked to be left out.

We also tried the rice spaghetti in laksa with crab sticks and bean sprouts (HK$50). What surprised us were the crab sticks – they weren’t artificially processed, but were made of real crabmeat.

Pairing vermicelli with Thai tom yum was surprisingly good. It had shredded chicken and bean curd puffs for toppings (HK$50). Although the tom yum  was not spicy enough and lacked  sourness, it was still  delicious. The shredded chicken was tender and the bean curd puffs soaked up the soup.

We weren’t thirsty even after drinking the laksa and tom yum, so it seems that Noodies is living up to its MSG-free promise.
