Chinese mushroom buns at Dimsum Mary

CLOSED Restaurant review: Dimsum Mary - unconventional take on traditional dishes

Tuen Mun eatery serves made-to-order dim sum with a difference

The new Dimsum Mary in Tuen Mun Town Plaza is an unconventional eatery. It offers traditional Chinese dim sum in a café setting with pink and white décor. In addition to traditional items such as spicy chicken feet and shrimp dumplings, the menu has many unusual dim sum dishes, which we preferred to the conventional ones. The Chinese mushroom buns (two for HK$18), shaped to resemble real mushrooms with a dusting of cocoa powder on top to complete the look, were stuffed with mushrooms and Korean vermicelli. Another interesting and enjoyable dish was the vegetarian fake shark’s fin soup with bird’s nest (HK$26). We also liked the sea bass with XO sauce rice rolls, which had large pieces of fish fillet. Birds nest egg tarts are given a new twist with the addition of honeycomb (HK$8 each). All the dim sum items are made to order. In the shape of a piglet head, the steamed custard piggy buns (HK$18) are stuffed with creamy custard. We just wish they could be a little larger.

While most of the offerings on the menu are Chinese dim sum, there are some Western snacks on offer. We liked the mini burger (HK$18), consisting of a patty, made of deep-fried shrimp and octopus, which is served with wasabi salad sauce. Of the four Western-influenced desserts on offer, we liked the moist green tea tiramisu with orange mousse (HK$28), which had plenty of matcha flavour.
