Restaurant review: Italian cuisine at Prego in SoHo

Prego offers simple well-made dishes in a friendly atmosphere

Cuisine: Italian

Price: about HK$300 without drinks or the service charge.

Ambience: very quiet on the night of our visit. Service was friendly and attentive.

Recommended dishes: the main elements in a simple dish of tomato bruschetta (HK$58) were spot-on – the grilled bread had a light, smoky flavour, the tomatoes were sweet and ripe, there was just enough olive oil and the basil was fragrant.

The polpettone (HK$218) – a not-too-dense meatloaf with beef and pork – comes with a choice of sauces. We asked for all of them and especially liked the marinara and truffle cream.

Pros: we were a little wary when we walked in and saw only three other diners; an almost-empty restaurant is not a good sign, especially when neighbouring outlets were packed (although on the other hand, being busy isn’t necessarily a sign of quality). We stayed and were mostly pleased with the food and the service. We told our waiter that we were sharing dishes, and the chef split our order of pasta.

Cons: the calamari (HK$148) was disappointing because the batter tasted of leavening.

What else? Prego replaces another Italian restaurant, Cecconi’s, which moved to Wyndham Street
