Restaurant review: interesting new flavours at Elephant Grounds, Causeway Bay

International dishes include ice cream sandwiches, tacos, pho and sake-braised ribs at this trendy al fresco cafe

We love keeping track of Elephant Grounds’ weekly changing selection of ice cream sandwiches on its social media platforms, although our cravings to try the interesting new flavours were often dampened at the prospect of the trek to Gough Street or Wong Chuk Hang.

But with a third branch opening in the heart of Causeway Bay, our last excuse to miss out on the treat (and calories) is gone.

Ice cream takeaway window.
Located in Fashion Walk, the up-and-coming food street where establishments such as Coedo Taproom and Burgeroom have already been providing great laid-back al fresco dining experiences, the café, which opened in December, is our go-to for a daily cup of joe, indulging baked goods from Homie Cookies and comfort dishes with an Asian twist.
Mexican fish taco.
While crispy kale quinoa salad with onsen egg and tortilla (HK$90), chicken karaage burger (HK$90) and Vietnamese pho (HK$95) will make a quick, satisfying solo lunch, spicy tuna taco (HK$120) and sake-braised baby back ribs (HK$185) will please bigger groups. For a lazy weekend brunch, expect cereal bowl, yogurt parfait, sweet or avocado toast, and other all-day breakfast staples.
Ice cream sandwich.
Other than ice cream sandwiches (HK$68), the venue also doubles as a takeaway creamery, offering a range of ten flavours (HK$40 per scoop) including coffee mocha fudge, Hokkaido milk with honeycomb, and our favourite, Thai milk tea. Thanks to the creative genies in their Wong Chuk Hang central kitchen, new flavours can always be expected and taro is just one of the more interesting that we’ve tried lately, with the red velvet or charcoal cone (add HK$8).
